Bioshock: Welcome to Rapture
I know this is not anime related, but well, I just can’t help it! Bioshock is one of those games that surpasses the “amazing” level and reaches the “epic” one. And since I still have to write about the fourth episode of Toradora! but I don’t feel like starting right now, you’re going to be treated to some tidbits about Bioshock…
Short summary:
In 1960, the plane in which the main character of the game is traveling crashes into the atlantic ocean. He survives and finds himself in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the remains of the plane. But there’s something else…a strange building resembling a lighthouse stands near to him and he enters it. Inside, he finds a small submarine that takes him to the underwater city of Rapture, an utopia ravaged by civil war and infested with monsters. Those monsters are actually the former citizens of the city, whose bodies and minds have undergone a drastic transformation due to the use of substances that can alter their genes…
General stuff:
There are other dangers as well, like the odd couples of the Big Daddies and the Little Sisters. The first are humans genetically modified who wear diving suits. They are very agressive and their task is to protect the Little Sisters, girls who produce an element known as ADAM. After the civil war broke out, these girls also started to “harvest” the ADAM from corpses… The problem that the player faces here is: what should you do about the Little Sisters? Are they the monsters some people claim them to be? Or rather are they victims?
There’s a certiin point at the game when you have to make up your mind and make a decission that will determine the rest of the game and even the kind of end you get. And I guess this is one of the most interesting things of the game. While playing you have to face difficult situations that force you to choose what you think may be either better, or moral. You talk to the few remaining sane citizens of Rapture, and well, some of them aren’t actually that sane, others have hidden plans, and some did horrible things in the past. There aren’t heros in this game. Just you, and your will to survive.
Graphics-wise, the quality is top-notch. The city of Rapture is designed following a certain Art Deco style, the enemies are really terrifying, although you don’t tend to look too much at them… they want to kill you, so if you are sensible enough, you won’t allow them to get very close…
To end with, it seems they are going to make a film based on the game… Uh, can’t wait!
